International Learning Opportunities
There are so many opportunities out there for teachers to enhance their practice through programs that will take them to locales far and near. Some programs allow teachers to design their own travel experience based on what they would like to bring to their classrooms. Many programs are heavily subsidized, offer grants, or are completely free! Some are specialized on certain subject and grade areas while others are open to all teachers. Funds for Teachers for example, had NY educators in 2015 travel to Vietnam to research the impact of American intervention, go to Athens to study Ancient Greek theater, and paddle down the Amazon River to collect date on specific fish species. The opportunities are endless, the only limit is your imagination.
Japan Society - The Educators’ Study Tour to Japan offers educators nationwide the opportunity to travel to Japan for three weeks to experience Japan first hand and bring their experiences back to the classroom. This three-week study tour acquaints participants with Japanese society through a wide range of site visits in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Aichi. Homestays with families and school visits are significant parts of the program. The tour focuses on K–12 school visits to help participants have a better understanding of Japan’s education system by meeting their counterparts in Japanese schools. It also provides opportunities to connect with Japanese schools, and to meet A-bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki who will talk about their first-hand experiences. Also included is an optional visit to a part of the Tohoku region hard hit by the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
International School Services - Organization that matches licensed American teachers with job opportunities abroad at various types of schools.
Korea Society - A Summer Fellowship in Korean Studies. Last year, the program was conducted in conjunction with the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia, PA. Participants got an intimate view of Korea through visits to the DMZ, Buddhist Temples, and early historical sites.
Funds for Teachers - Fund for Teachers supports educators' efforts to develop skills, knowledge and confidence that impact student achievement. By trusting teachers to design unique fellowships, Fund for Teachers grants validate teachers' professionalism and leadership, as well. Since 2001, Fund for Teachers has invested $22 million in nearly 6,000 teachers, transforming grants into growth for teachers and their students.
Global Exploration for Educators Organization - Organization dedicated to encouraging and assisting as many teachers as possible to travel abroad and then share their experiences with their students upon their return to the classroom
