ITHS and the Global Community |
|
Information Technology High School is located in Western Queens, one of the most diverse places on Earth. Our students hail from 5 continents, speak a multitude of languages, are first-generation Americans or newcomers to the United States, and bring a plethora of cultural experiences that enhance our school community and make it a very special place. These students will soon leave our school and enter a world that is extraordinarily dynamic. They will have jobs that are mobile and will be collaborating with people all over the globe. It is essential that we prepare them for this and teach them 21st century skills that will serve them well. That we teach them how to recognize different cultural perspectives and expose them to issues that define the world we live in. This is why global education is necessary.
What is Global Education?
We live in a world where we are all connected.
Global Education:
"emphasizes the unity and interdependence of human society, developing a sense of self and appreciation of cultrual diversity, affirmation of social justice and human rights, building peace and actions for a sustainable future in different times and places."
- Global Perspectives: A framework for global perspectives in Australian schools
"gives children and young people the opportunity to develop critical thinking about complex global issues in the safe space of the classroom."
- Oxfam "Education for Global Citizenship: A Guide for Schools"
"enables people to understand the links between their own lives and those of people throughout the world"
- David Hicks "A Rational for Global Education"
